Native Plant Restorations: Patience Pays Off!

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - May 7, 2021 - News

Native plant restorations often don’t look like much the first couple of years. The plants are busy establishing their deep root systems which are so great at preventing erosion and allowing water to filter into the soil. Once their roots are established underground, then the plants invest their energies into robust above ground growth and flowering.

Out at Spring Lake Town Hall on the shores of Fish Lake, the native prairie and shoreline restoration areas seeded in fall 2019 are moving into their second growing season. This year the plants will continue to develop their root systems and you will start to see some more action above around too. Later this summer, look for the bright yellow flowers of Black-eyed Susans which are commonly seen early in a site’s restoration. As time goes on, other prairie favorites will follow, especially as the site moves into years three and four.

With native plants patience is key, but very worth it!

This restoration project was partially funded by a Conservation Partners Legacy thanks to the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment’s Outdoor Heritage Fund. The project is a partnership between PLSLWD and Spring Lake Township.

FREE Restore your Shoreline Workshop – April 17th!

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - March 23, 2018 - News, Prior Lake, Spring Lake

Do you have an eroding shoreline? Want to make your shoreline more lake-friendly? Join us for our free Restore Your Shoreline Workshop!

Restore Your Shoreline Workshop
Tuesday, April 17 from 6:30 to 8:00pm
Spring Lake Town Hall, 20381 Fairlawn Ave, Prior Lake

At the workshop you’ll learn how to protect and restore your shoreline with seeded or planted buffers between your lawn and the lake. Not only will a shoreline restoration stop the erosion and protect your lakeshore property, you’ll also be helping improve the water quality of the lake you love! Flowers in your planted buffer can add a splash of color to your shoreline and provide habitat for birds and pollinators.

You may even be eligible for free technical assistance to help design your project and for cost share funds of up to 50% of the cost of materials and installation!

This free workshop is open to all Scott County residents. Visit  www.scottswcd.org or call the Scott SWCD office at 952-492-5425 to register.

Raymond Park Restoration Project Underway

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - August 11, 2017 - Ongoing Projects, News, Spring Lake

The District is partnering with the City of Prior Lake as well as Spring Lake Township and Great River Greening to complete a restoration project at Raymond Park, located on the south side of Spring Lake. The project includes buckthorn removal, an oak savanna restoration, beach plant community restoration and replacing the existing turf grass with low-maintenance grass. For more information on the project check out the project factsheet.

Work at the park is now well underway and most of the buckthorn removal and site preparation work is complete for the native plants. Seeding and any planting will happen this fall once the weather cools down a bit to increase the survival of the new plants.

This project is partially funded by a Conservation Partners Legacy grant sponsored by the MN Department of Natural Resources and the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council.
