Posted by PLSLWD Staff - April 12, 2018 - News

Sign-up for the Spring 2018 Clean Water Clean-Up event! The Spring 2018 event will be for Sunday, April 29th from 12:30 – 2:30 pm and will be held at Crystal Lake Park in Prior Lake. We will be raking leaves and removing buckthorn at the park!

Please register here for this free, family-friendly event.

Volunteers will receive a hat & snacks and be entered to win door prizes from local businesses and rain barrels donated by Lord of the Gears, a robotics team from Prior Lake/Savage middle schools. Don’t forget to bring your rake to the event!

In case of inclement weather, the Spring 2018 clean-up will be rescheduled for May 6th. NOTE: The event was pushed back a week from the original event day in hopes that it will give the park a chance to dry out.

During the Fall 2017 clean-up, volunteers raked, blew and piled 1200 pounds of leaves and removed 880 pounds of buckthorn! Check out our Facebook page for pictures from past events!

Successful Community Clean Water Clean-Up!

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - November 9, 2017 - News, Prior Lake

Nearly 45 volunteers braved near freezing temperatures to “Rake for the Lake” on Sunday, Nov. 5 at Fish Point Park in Prior Lake. The clean-up was located at the park where the City of Prior Lake and the District just completed a water quality improvements project, which included native prairie plantings, wetland enhancements and installation of an iron-enhanced sand filter to treat incoming stormwater before it reaches Prior Lake.

Volunteers represented the Cub Scouts, Savage Area Women of Tomorrow, Prior Lake Association, the Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District’s Citizen Advisory Committee, the District’s Board of Managers, the Mayor of Prior Lake and the City of Prior Lake and were joined by dedicated neighbors and friends.

The volunteers raked, blew and piled 1200 pounds of leaves that city staff removed and will use as a soil enhancement for their tree nursery. They also cut and pulled 880 pounds of buckthorn (one dump truck load) that was hauled to the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s Organic Recycling Facility (ORF).

After the hard work was done, volunteers enjoyed hot beverages and snacks and had an opportunity to win a variety of great prizes donated by area merchants.

To check out pictures from the clean-up visit our Facebook page!

Fall and Spring Clean Water Clean-Ups are a Prior Lake tradition and this Fall’s clean-up was the seventh!  Clean-ups began in the fall of 2014 and organizers are looking forward to the Spring of 2018! If you missed out, email info@plslwd.org to be added to the email list for next spring’s event!

Fall Clean-Up rakes in 3.18 TONS of leaves!

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - November 4, 2016 - News

  Fall 2016 Clean Water Clean-Up_1

On one of the coolest mornings this fall, 40 volunteers from around the community took part in the fourth Clean Water Clean-Up, a “rake for the lake” event at Sand Point Beach Park to prevent leaves and other organic debris from polluting Prior Lake. The event was a joint effort of the Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District and the City of Prior Lake.

Fall 2016 Clean Water Clean-Up resultsVolunteers of all ages were spread out over several acres and successfully raked up over 3.18 tons of leaves and organic debris, slightly more than the Spring Clean-Up at the park. Leaves and other organic debris can be carried by stormwater into waterbodies where organic debris releases phosphorus- a favorite food of algae. Severe algal blooms were experienced this year and can impact recreation, wildlife and property values. Visit our Facebook page to view photos from the event!

Retailers and organizations in the area generously donated door prizes and volunteers were treated to a picnic lunch.

The 2017 Spring clean-up event will be scheduled soon, check our Volunteer Events page for updates!
