50 Years of Protecting Your Water Resources

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - April 23, 2020 - Ongoing Projects, Completed Projects, News, Prior Lake, Spring Lake

This year not only marks the 50th celebration of Earth Day, but the 50th anniversary of the Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District! The District was founded March 4, 1970 in response to a petition filed by residents for the purpose of wisely managing & conserving the District’s waters and natural resources.

Improving Your Water Resources for 50 Years

Over the last 50 years the District has been busy implementing projects and various programs to improve and protect the lakes, creeks and wetlands of the District for the benefits of the humans and critters that live here. Check out some highlights of the last 50 years in our 50th Anniversary brochure here.

Celebrations & Activities Planned

We will be celebrating our 50th Anniversary with several special activities and events this year, including a Trivia Night at the Boathouse Brothers Brewery (fingers crossed!) and a Hike the Watershed Challenge, so keep an eye out for more information!

Spring Lake Alum Treatment Complete!

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - June 5, 2018 - News, Spring Lake, Spring Lake Alum Treatment

The Spring Lake Alum Treatment was completed on May 26, 2018.  Mike Thibault of Prior Lake, with VidPixDrone, provided excellent footage of the treatment overlaid with some facts about the treatment itself!  In case you weren’t able to see the alum treatment in action, click here to view a short video capturing the barge and alum floc (learn what floc is in the video!).  Fun fact: Mike’s daughter wrote and recorded the music!

This was the 2nd of 3 treatments planned for Spring Lake. The first treatment was done in 2013 and the third treatment will be done in three years or so, depending on the how the water quality in Spring Lake responds.

Everything went smoothly and we have already heard great feedback from lakeshore residents.  “Water quality is amazing. We were swimming this weekend and I couldn’t believe how good it looked. With the heat wave last weekend [Memorial Day weekend], we should have seen more algae and didn’t” said Jeff Will, a lakeshore resident of Spring Lake.

For more detailed information about the treatment and alum in general, please visit www.springlakealum.com.

Monitoring Results in Spring Lake after Alum Treatment

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - September 8, 2014 - Completed Projects, News, Monitoring, Spring Lake Alum Treatment

Revised October 13, 2014

The Prior Lake – Spring Lake Watershed District (PLSLWD) treated Spring Lake with Aluminum Sulfate (Alum) in October of 2013.  The graphs below summarize sample results that have been taken since 2004, by the Three Rivers Park District.  Two to Three samples are taken each month (during ice-free conditions), and the average monthly concentrations are displayed below (each graph represents one month).  The red bar indicates the samples were taken after the Alum Treatment.

Water quality standards for Total Phosphorus on Spring Lake are currently held at 40 µg/L.  However, the PLSLWD is submitting a request to the MPCA to raise the standard to 60 µg/L (which makes the standard less strict) based off of research that indicated Total Phosphorus on Spring Lake has never been as low as the current water quality standard.  See 2013 Pre-settlement Water Quality and Algal Change in Spring Lake for a summary of this research, or 2013 Historical Water Quality and Ecological Change in Spring Lake for a full report.

So far, the results are very encouraging; however, the flood likely has impacted the results in June and July.

Initial Results Are Positive Following Alum Treatment

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - December 20, 2013 - Completed Projects, News, Spring Lake Alum Treatment

The results from the Spring Lake alum treatment (featured in the November 9th edition of the Prior Lake American) are looking good, according to water quality data released by Barr Engineering.

Before the treatment started, Barr Engineering collected water samples from Spring Lake and measured total phosphorus and Chlorophyll-A.  Monitoring chlorophyll levels is a way to track algae blooms. Surface waters with lots of algae are typically high in nutrients, like phosphorus and nitrogen; that’s why it’s also important to measure phosphorus, because phosphorus drives algal growth. For reference, lakes like Spring are not supposed to exceed 40 micrograms per liter (µg/L) for total phosphorus and 14 µg/L for Chlorophyll-A in Minnesota.

Prior to the treatment, Barr recorded 220 µg/L of total phosphorus and 45.5 µg/L of Chlorophyll-A for Spring Lake. On November 1st, following the alum treatment, Barr measured 59 µg/L of total phosphorus and Chlorophyll-A concentrations of 4 µg/L, which indicate a significant drop in phosphorus and chlorophyll concentrations. While these initial results are positive, the real test will come next spring when the lake has to compete with spring runoff and warming temperatures.

PLSLWD staff will continue monitoring Spring Lake in the spring once conditions allow, since our monitoring program has wrapped up for the season. We have a long way to go to clean up Spring Lake, but it looks like this big first step went well.

First Alum Treatment is Complete!

Posted by PLSLWD Staff - November 6, 2013 - Completed Projects, News, Spring Lake Alum Treatment

HAB Aquatic Solutions, Inc. finished dosing Spring Lake with alum on November 1st. The crew only encountered a few windy days during the course of the treatment, but were able to successfully navigate toward the sheltered side of the lake to continue dosing without delay.

Below you can check out the before and after pictures taken from the wheelhouse on the barge. During the application, as the alum settles toward the lake bottom it sweeps phosphorus out of the water column, and the impact is quite clear!

As you can see, there’s quite a difference!

On the last day of the treatment, Barr Engineering recorded a significant (almost one meter) improvement in water transparency. District staff will continue monitoring in the spring once conditions allow, since our fall monitoring has wrapped up for the season. We have a long way to go to clean up Spring Lake, but it looks like this big first step went well.
